Growing Curiosity and Confidence at the Heiser Boys & Girls Club
At Fork Farms, the best kind of growth goes far beyond plants. That’s why we’re proud to spotlight our inspiring partners at the General Heiser Boys & Girls Club, where hydroponic learning is taking root in powerful ways.
As part of their Garden Club, students are using a Flex Farm to explore science, sustainability, teamwork, and nutrition — all through hands-on, real-world experience. Over the last few weeks, the club’s 4th–5th grade group and morning program members have been diving into topics like pH levels, water quality, and photosynthesis, all while planting, nurturing, and observing their seedlings grow.
One of the most powerful outcomes? Connection.
Students aren’t just learning about roots and stems, they’re learning how to problem-solve together, share responsibility, and support one another. When one tray was accidentally overwatered, the group rallied to fix the issue. When someone needed help labeling plants, a peer stepped in. As one student put it: “I liked working with my friends. When I needed help, a friend helped me, and then I helped someone else.”
Each Thursday afternoon, the Garden Club comes alive with curiosity. Students check nutrient levels (“a healthy snack for the plants”), observe water flow, and reflect with garden affirmations — a favorite way to stay grounded and connected.
The learning doesn't stop in the garden. Through classroom discussions and guided worksheets, students explore broader questions like: Who feeds our community? What foods can we grow with hydroponics? How do different farming systems compare?
At Heiser, hydroponics is a gateway to deeper understanding, stronger friendships, and real leadership development.
We're honored to grow alongside these young changemakers.
