Purchasing Microgreen Seeds
How and where can I purchase microgreen seeds?
While we don't offer a microgreen seed bundle outside of the Microgreen Starter Kit, Fork Farms recommends sourcing seeds from online vendors we trust and know have high-quality products.
Microgreen Vendors
Johnny's Selected Seeds offers a wide variety of microgreen seeds with a comparison chart, real data from harvest yield trials, and more. To find microgreens best-suited for the Flex Micro, use the filters found on the left hand side of the screen. You can select filters like "hydroponic performers", "fast-growing", and "organic".
TrueLeaf Market Seed Company has several varieties best grown in hydroponic applications. Like Johnny's Selected Seeds, they have a menu on the left hand side of the green to filter by level of difficulty, and heirloom options. Their Microgreen Grow Hub is full of tricks, tips, and recommendations. Here are some sampler packs if you'd like to test many varieties at once:
Selecting Microgreen Seed
Depending on your goals, we suggest you consider shopping with these characteristics in mind:
- Hydroponic performer - for best success in the Flex Micro
- Days to maturity - What are your expectations? What is the demand for this product?
- Flavor - What dishes are you looking to elevate? What matches?
Quantities to Purchase
Microgreen seed is sold and sown in ounces and pounds.
Each variety may come with specific sowing instructions. For example, Johnny's Selected Seeds lists one ounce of Red Russian Kale seed provides 3 trays of microgreens, or 33 ounces of microgreens, after 13.5 days. If you want a bi-weekly harvest for a year, we recommend purchasing 2 pounds of seed.
We highly recommend virtually planning and tracking your microgreens in the Flex Micro with the Flex Micro Virtual Manager Tool!
