Key Product
Flex Farm
The biggest benefits that we've had from our partnership with Fork Farms is the ability for our small alternative school to expand curriculum offerings and to get students engaged in on-going, hands-on learning activities. This has been a consistent and significant asset to our teachers and students. I would highly recommend this program to enhance your course offerings and to increase engagement in the classroom.

About Chariho Alternative Learning Academy
Chariho Alternative Learning Academy is an alternative education institution serving K-12 students with a focus on project-based and hands-on learning approaches. The academy enrolls approximately 80 students and prioritizes student engagement. The Challenge
Chariho Alternative Learning Academy struggled with poor student engagement in their traditional classroom settings. The lack of interactive and hands-on learning opportunities led to disengagement and inconsistent participation among students.
The Solution
To address this challenge, Chariho Alternative Learning Academy introduced Fork Farms' Flex Farm hydroponic system in their science lab. This system provided a practical, hands-on 'seed to table' learning opportunity. Two dedicated math/science teachers coordinated daily care, involving 12-15 students in daily routines such as seed planting, pH monitoring, water level checking, nutrient feeding, harvesting, and maintenance. All students from grades 5-8 participated through integrated science, math, and project-based learning lessons. According to Brian Tetreault, Director of Chariho Alternative Learning Academy and NAEA Region 1 Board Member, 'The biggest benefits that we've had from our partnership with Fork Farms is the ability for our small alternative school to expand curriculum offerings and to get students engaged in on-going, hands-on learning activities. This has been a consistent and significant asset to our teachers and students. I would highly recommend this program to enhance your course offerings and to increase engagement in the classroom.'
The Results
The implementation of the Flex Farm hydroponic system at Chariho Alternative Learning Academy yielded significant positive results. The curriculum was expanded with ongoing, hands-on learning opportunities, leading to increased student engagement and consistency across different grade levels. The project also showcased a large harvest potential, providing visible, tangible outcomes for learners. Metrics from the initiative include approximately 80 students enrolled, with 12 directly involved in daily tasks, and participation from grades 5-8 in seven daily tasks, enhancing the overall educational experience.
Advice From Chariho
Schools looking to integrate hydroponics into their curriculum will find that the Flex Farm is the easiest and most efficient way to grow leafy greens with minimal maintenance. A successful approach is to start small, building comfort and consistency with students and staff before expanding the program. As confidence grows, the farm can be scaled to support broader curriculum integration and community use. It’s also helpful to provide extension activities for students who show strong interest, giving them opportunities to deepen their learning through advanced tasks, data collection, or project leadership—further enriching both the educational experience and the program’s overall impact.
